Hens and Chicks

At the April meeting of the St Wenn Quilters we were joined by the twin 11 year-old grand daughters of one of the group, on a visit from London, for a days introduction to sewing and using a machine.  Jo Trudgian, who popped in to say ‘hello’, was enthused for her own two daughters and persuaded us to run a day for local children in half term.  We wanted to offer it to youngsters and their Mums or ‘Grand-Mums’ and ‘Hens and Chicks’ was born.  We advertised and 9 ‘chicks’  and their helpers joined us in St Wenn Hall on 1st June.

The Quilters donated pre-cut fabrics and the other materials of their own and their sewing machines.  Our highly qualified and very patient Tutor, Lesley Coles, donated her time and considerable expertise and ran the day in her usual organised fashion.  She started with an essential introduction to safety – no cut or pierced fingers or sewn thumbs in this group.

They started by sewing straight lines to get a feel for the machine; had great fun choosing their fabrics and then settled down to the real work; joining small squares together to make a larger square.  In the afternoon they completed their project with wadding, backing and binding and at the end of the afternoon we had some lovely place mats and a fabric bowl.

We all had a great day – the delighted children were able to go home with a finished item and the quilters were able to collapse contentedly.  We even had ‘hens’ wanting to join us to have a go themselves – what a success!

Our ‘chicks’ could be of any gender so come on chaps!

We are hoping to run another day in the summer holidays and again in the October half-term. We will announce the dates in the magazine and on the website.
